CARES Continuing Education Program
Recovery is a journey, not a destination. And CARES is a process, not an event. Successful peer recovery support services include support not just for the peer, but also for the peer recovery coach.
The CARES Continuing Education program is designed to provide ongoing education in established and emerging techniques for providing exceptional peer support services while providing opportunities for personal growth and professional development.

- All CARES from cohorts 1- 67 are required to earn 12 CEUs each year to keep their certification active. All Qualifying CEUs for 2025 must be earned between January and December 2025.
- Each CARES must earn 6 CEUs by attending a CARES Academy Connect. Please plan accordingly
- Starting in 2025, each CARES must have at least 1 CEU hour of peer-related Ethics training.
- All CEU submissions need to be completed by December 31, 2025. If you have not submitted CEUs by that date, your CPS-AD certification is considered inactive.
- There will be a 15-day grace period for submissions, until January 15, 2026, with a $25 penalty for not submitting in a timely manner.
- Any CARES who has not finished their CEU process by January 31, 2026 will be placed in inactive status. A late fee of $100 will be required to reactivate their CARES certification.
- CEU’s earned in a calendar year may not roll over into the next year.
- It is the responsibility of each CARES to track the number of CEUs they have attained, and to submit certificates for those trainings at the end of the year, prior to December 31, 2025.
- We accept CEUs from the Georgia Mental Health Consumer Network’s CPS project, and their Ethics training will count for our recertification process.
- We accept peer-related trainings from other organizations as well, including, Relias, Faces and Voices of Recovery, and the Opioid Response Network, among others.
- The criteria for accepting other trainings is that they pertain to the subjects that relate to peer work, like Science of Addiction and Recovery, Motivational Interviewing, Stigma and Recovery Language, Ethics, MAT/MAR support of peers, harm reduction, self-care and wellness and more, and that they not be clinical in nature.
- If a CARES attends classes other than those offered by or pre-approved by CARES, they can click here to request approval of the CEUs. They may also request and complete the same form for pre-approval of classes.
- If you have not earned your CEUs in any year after you complete the CARES Academy, your certification will become inactive. Click here for instructions on reactivating.

CARES Accountability
Each CARES is responsible for being aware of and maintaining the requirements for keeping her or his certification active. Because CARES is a Medicaid-billable service, adherence to the continuing education standards represented on this page is critical not just for the success of the individual CARES, but also for the program as a whole.
Moving And Shaking
CARES are selected in part because they are active in life–movers and shakers in their communities. It is the CARES’ responsibility to contact GCSA to notify us of changes in email, or if you are not receiving email from us. Please contact us to let us know where to find you. Your success is important to us!
