Creating and Sustaining Cultures of Recovery

Training

“Alliance”, “connection”, “bond” – these are all words people use to describe those crucial relationships that helped them to move into early recovery and to sustain their recovery. Being on a road to building on our existing strengths in cultural competence can help us to be present to more and more people in ways that can support their recovery.

Unfortunately, the steps for achieving and sustaining continued movement toward cultural competence as individuals and as organizations elude many of us. We offer one or two day workshops designed to increase participants’ awareness of resources available to enhance their own cultural competence, assess areas of strength, and discover opportunities within their own organizations to build culturally competent recovery services.

Participants will be invited to explore what helps, what heals and how they can make a difference – as individuals and within their organizations. Through dialogues, courageous conversations and exposure to video and print media, participants will discover the strengths within themselves and their organizations and explore the ways they can enhance and build upon those strengths for services that are recovery oriented, inviting and supportive.

Objectives of these workshops include:
Participants will engage in and practice key skills for courageous conversations
Participants will learn about key terms and concepts
Participants will learn about the role of culture within a recovery orientation
Participants will leave with ideas for using their own awareness, communication skills, and personal strengths to enhance their recovery oriented and culturally competent practices.
There are also multiple CARES (Certified Addiction and Recovery Empowerment Specialist) across the state of Georgia that are trained facilitators as well.

Please contact us at info@gc4recovery.org for availability to facilitate these workshops in your organization or to let us know you are interested in offering any of these workshops.

Cultural Competency Training of Trainers

In addition to offering Cultural Competency Workshops, Georgia Council for Recovery offers a Cultural Competence Training of Trainers. This three-day training provides others the opportunity to support certified peers and others across Georgia in building this competency that is so fundamental to forming effective connections with people who are seeking or in early recovery from substance use and/or mental health challenges.

This workshop trains facilitators for one and two day cultural competence workshops designed to increase participants’ awareness of resources available to enhance their own cultural competence, assess areas of strength, and discover opportunities within their own organizations to build culturally competent recovery services.

Admission to the three day training of facilitators requires participation in the one or two day workshop. Participation in the full two-day workshop is highly recommended. In the three day training of facilitators, we work to help prepare facilitators to be a vital presence in supporting others on their journey of discovery and exploration. This workshop provides an opportunity for potential facilitators to understand that their role can support or impede a participant’s experience and willingness to engage in dialogue and courageous conversations.

Emphasis in this workshop includes
  • Facilitating dialogue rather debate;
  • Understanding one’s own biases so they do not influence or direct the conversations;
  • Providing an environment where it is safe for others to explore and understand their own biases;
  • Developing neutrality and comfort with silence and differing experiences;
  • Presence to stories of experiences that are at times emotion ridden;
  • Establishment of conversation guidelines to help keep conversations on track and invitational to everyone in the group.

In the training of facilitators, we will discuss a variety of learning modules and activities that may be included in a one or two day workshop and the essential modules and activities. Admission to this training requires completion of an application and there is a selection process for this facilitator training.
