GCSA Supports The National Recovery Month Act

The Georgia Council on Substance Abuse (GCSA) strongly supports the bi-partisan Honoring National Recovery Month Act and calls on every member of the Georgia Congressional Delegation to both sign on as a co-sponsor and publicly announce their support for this important legislation which will have a positive impact on families across Georgia.

GCSA thank Representative David Trone (D-MD), Ann McLane Kuster (D-NH), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), and Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA), for introducing  the Honoring National Recovery Month Act to provide consistent funding for National Recovery Month programming. The Honoring National Recovery Month Act provides $1 million annually to develop materials, distribute best practices, and lead activities related to Recovery Month. The legislation provides flexibility for funds to be used by a national organization for Recovery Month activities.

The Senate companion bill will be introduced by Senators Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) and Dan Sullivan (R-AK).

“GCSA is honored to partner with the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities to coordinate National Recovery Month events across Georgia each September. This important legislation will allow the Georgia Recovery Community to know that the necessary support is in place from Congress to have a level of stability which allows for the people of Georgia to plan these events in local communities,” said Neil Campbell, Executive Director of the Georgia Council on Substance Abuse.

“National Recovery Month is important to the Georgia Recovery Community.  It, simultaneously, breaks down the stigma surrounding addiction and recovery while bringing a positive message of hope to communities across Georgia.  The Honoring National Recovery Month Act is a bill that every member of Congress from Georgia should not only vote for, but, promote within their districts, as an example of a positive effort to save lives, restore families, and strengthen communities,” said Jeff Breedlove, Chief of Policy and Communications for the Georgia Council on Substance Abuse.
