{"id":3878,"date":"2021-03-11T17:07:46","date_gmt":"2021-03-11T22:07:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gc4recovery.org\/?p=3878"},"modified":"2021-03-12T09:21:16","modified_gmt":"2021-03-12T14:21:16","slug":"sb-4-passes-the-general-assembly-awaiting-governor-kemps-signature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gc4recovery.org\/gc4rnewwebsite20\/sb-4-passes-the-general-assembly-awaiting-governor-kemps-signature\/","title":{"rendered":"SB 4 Passes the General Assembly &#8211; Awaiting  Governor Kemp\u2019s Signature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Georgia Council on Substance Abuse congratulates Senator Kay Kirkpatrick on the unanimous and bi-partisan vote by the Georgia House of Representatives on SB 4 \u2013 The Patient Brokering Bill.<\/p>\n<p>Now that SB 4 has passed the General Assembly with bi-partisan support and unanimous support in both the Senate and the House, the Georgia Council on Substance Abuse encourages Governor Kemp to sign SB 4 into law with every urgency.<\/p>\n<p>The acts of patient brokering and excessive drug-testing simultaneously degrade a system that is already under stress. \u00a0Most people who suffer from substance use disorders do not get the treatment they need. \u00a0Opioid use disorders are still taking the lives of an average of 4 people a day in our state. \u00a0This is not a theoretical exercise. This is a reality which must be addressed or Georgians and their families will be victimized and, in some cases, die.<\/p>\n<p>This is serious business.<\/p>\n<p>Patient brokering\u00a0is already happening across the country and\u00a0is being addressed\u00a0as close to home as Florida and Tennessee.\u00a0Florida enacted an\u00a0anti-kickback law in 2016\u00a0and since then, similar laws have been enacted in Arizona, California, New York, Tennessee and Utah.\u00a0\u00a0When these criminals are driven out of Tennessee and Florida, our state becomes at-risk by virtue of\u00a0an easy drive up and down I-75.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0law such as SB 4 is needed\u00a0because there is a risk that individuals with addiction will be thought of and treated as a commodity and the\u00a0real\u00a0potential for abuse\u00a0by brokering\u00a0is there.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Georgia Council on Substance Abuse congratulates Senator Kay Kirkpatrick on the unanimous and bi-partisan vote by the Georgia House of Representatives on SB 4 \u2013 The Patient Brokering Bill.
