Local Elected Officials Leading for Addiction Recovery in Communities Across Georgia<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

The\u00a0Georgia Council on Substance Abuse<\/b>\u00a0is honored to announce the\u00a0Georgia Communities Working Group on Addiction and Recovery<\/i><\/b>. Local elected officials will combine efforts to make progress\u00a0addressing\u00a0addiction and\u00a0supporting\u00a0recovery in communities across Georgia. This bi-partisan coalition will address issues, policy, and legislation\u00a0that will increase the impact of recovery and reduce the effects of substance\u00a0use\u00a0disorder, a chronic health condition\u00a0which has\u00a0been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Georgia Communities Working Group on Addiction and Recovery<\/i><\/b>\u00a0will host regular meetings with stakeholders, attend site visits, and promote policies which will save lives. The\u00a0GCSA\u00a0will serve as the coordinating partner organization to help facilitate and advance the efforts of this bi-partisan statewide effort.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCommunities across Georgia were already struggling with\u00a0substance\u00a0use\u00a0disorder issues prior to COVID-19 and\u00a0all evidence is showing that\u00a0the pandemic has increased those struggles exponentially.\u00a0 The bipartisan\u00a0Georgia Communities Working Group on Addiction and Recovery<\/i>\u00a0<\/b>will\u00a0listen to\u00a0people across Georgia,\u00a0will recognize the strengths that exist in their respective communities and help everyone\u00a0realize the hope of recovery,\u201d\u00a0said Neil Campbell, Executive Director of the Georgia Council on Substance Abuse.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe\u00a0Georgia Communities Working Group on Addiction and Recovery<\/i><\/b>\u00a0will allow Georgia to meet the moment and focus on holistic, grassroots\u00a0solutions to the\u00a0SUD\u00a0crisis. Addiction is real, but recovery is also very real and Georgia Recovers Together,\u201d\u00a0said Jeff Breedlove, Chief of Policy and Communications for the Georgia Council on Substance Abuse.<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe health and economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has created new barriers for Americans seeking treatment for\u00a0substance\u00a0use\u00a0disorders and mental illness. The worry and additional stress it has caused is creating new challenges for countless people across\u00a0Georgia. The\u00a0Georgia Communities Working Group on Addiction and Recovery<\/i><\/b>\u00a0will identify bipartisan solutions to bolster prevention efforts and expand access to peer-led recovery programs,\u201d\u00a0said Campbell.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhile we have a vaccine for COVID, we will never have a vaccine for addiction. Recent data shows us that we have no time to waste in the fight against the addiction crisis. The\u00a0Georgia Communities Working Group on Addiction and Recovery<\/i><\/b>\u00a0is ready to get to work to end the addiction epidemic and save lives. When local governments support peer led recovery programs, we save tax payer dollars, make communities safer, build a stronger workforce, and restore families,\u201d\u00a0said Breedlove.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n
