The\u00a0Georgia Council on Substance Abuse\u00a0<\/b>supports the bipartisan\u00a0Substance Use Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery Act<\/b><\/em>\u00a0and encourages Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock to sign on as Co-Sponsors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Substance Use Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery Act<\/em>\u00a0reauthorizes and strengthens the Substance Abuse Block Grant program, including requiring that funding goes to evidence-based services, including medication-assisted treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Georgia Council on Substance Abuse thanks U.S. Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and Ben Ray Luj\u00e1n (D-NM) for their bipartisan legislation which will increase investments in substance misuse prevention, treatment, and recovery programs.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Substance Abuse Block Grant program is set to expire at the end of 2022. In addition to reauthorizing the program, the bipartisan\u00a0Substance Use Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery Act\u00a0<\/em>strengthens the Substance Abuse Block Grant program in a number of ways, including by:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Increasing potential funding for the program from $1.9 billion to $3.2 billion;<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Creating a 10% set-aside for recovery services \u2013 the program currently includes a 20% set-aside for prevention services;<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Barring funds from going to recovery programs that are not evidence-based. For instance, organizations that refuse to serve individuals receiving medication-assisted treatment \u2013 which is the gold standard for opioid use disorder treatment \u2013 would not be able to receive funding.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    \u201cGeorgia is facing an\u00a0<\/span>epidemic surrounding substance misuse, overdoses, and new cases of\u00a0<\/span>substance\u00a0<\/span>use\u00a0<\/span>disorders.\u00a0<\/span>It is not an exaggeration to say that everyone in our State has been touched by this epidemic, so we need\u00a0Congress to\u00a0<\/span>respond by\u00a0<\/span>strengthening\u00a0<\/span>prevention, treatment, and recovery programs. It is critical Congress increase investments in addressing substance misuse and ensure that we specifically support recovery and proven peer led\u00a0<\/span>programs\u00a0<\/span>of all kinds,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>said Neil Campbell, Executive Director, Georgia Council on Substance Abuse<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n
