Georgia Council for Recovery leadership team, recently had the privilege of attending the Recovery Leadership Summit hosted by Faces and Voices of Recovery in the vibrant city of Washington, DC. This four-day conference was a transformative journey filled with inspiration, knowledge, and camaraderie. As we look back on our time at this remarkable event, we cannot help but express our overwhelming gratitude for the incredible experiences we had.
On Day 2, we were captivated by the keynote speakers, Beth Macy and Dr. Stephen Loyd, whose wisdom and insights left an indelible mark on our hearts.
Beth Macy, the author of the compelling book “Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company That Addicted America,” shared her insights into the world of harm reduction. Her extensive research and experiences shed light on the urgent need for approaches that prioritize the safety and well-being of individuals struggling with addiction.
During her presentation, Macy emphasized the importance of embracing harm reduction practices as a means of saving lives and fostering positive change. She highlighted how harm reduction approaches provide practical and compassionate support to those affected by substance use disorders. By shifting the focus from punitive measures to strategies that reduce the risks associated with drug use, we can engage with individuals more effectively and offer them a path toward recovery.
Dr. Stephen Loyd’s inspiring discussion shed light on the importance of unity and collective action in driving positive change.Through collaboration, we can challenge stigmas, advocate for policy reform, and ensure access to quality resources and support for all individuals affected by addiction.
As we reflect on Dr. Loyd’s profound insights, we are reminded of the immense potential that lies within our own communities. Together, we have the power to shape a narrative of hope, compassion, and healing. By fostering strong partnerships, engaging with diverse stakeholders, and amplifying the voices of those in recovery, we can create lasting change.
Their expertise and passion for the field of recovery instilled in us a renewed sense of purpose and dedication. We were truly honored to have been in the presence of such remarkable individuals.
Our hearts are filled with excitement as we reflect on the invaluable knowledge gained and the connections forged at the Recovery Leadership Summit. We extend our sincerest gratitude to Faces and Voices of Recovery for organizing such an extraordinary event, and we are immensely grateful for the opportunity to have participated. A large part of what we take away from the Summit is the work that has gone before to lift the voices of recovery – over 20 years of recovery leadership! – and we will strive each day to remember the lessons learned, the progress made. We know that we stand on the shoulders of giants and we are grateful for the teaching and the taillights to follow.
The experiences we shared and the insights we gained will continue to shape our approach to recovery and strengthen our commitment to supporting individuals on their journey toward healing. We return to Georgia with renewed energy and determination, eager to implement positive change and promote recovery capital in all its dimensions. The Recovery Leadership Summit was a true testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and the unwavering spirit of recovery.
