The Georgia Council for Recovery
Supports SB 79
The “Fentanyl Eradication and Removal Act”
The Georgia Council for Recovery supports SB 79 – The “Fentanyl Eradication and Removal Act” by Senator Russ Goodman.
The Georgia Council for Recovery continues to work with Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones and the Senate members of the General Assembly Working Group on Addiction and Recovery to advance both a Senate Study Committee and companion legislation to address the critical aspects of the Addiction Epidemic.
“Fentanyl is a game changer. It is deadly and dangerous. Some people trafficking fentanyl may need criminal justice involvement while others need medical support. Finding the right balance will position Georgia to serve families across Georgia in an effective manner. We are working closely with our recovery allies in the state legislature to address the need for support for individuals under criminal justice supervision and beyond,” said Laurisa Guerrero, Executive Director of the Georgia Council for Recovery.
“Those who traffic fentanyl and prey on my brothers and sisters in active addiction need to face the full force of the law. At the same time, Georgia must provide peer led professional supports and services for those who suffer from the disease of addiction. I am confident Lt. Governor Burt Jones and the Georgia Senate will continue their bipartisan efforts to save lives, restore families, and strengthen communities,” said Jeff Breedlove, Strategic Policy Advisor Georgia Council for Recovery.
Key policy aspects to be addressed are incorporating programs which intersect with Georgians who are in state, county, or city custody of the Department of Corrections and/or the Department of Community Supervision including but not limited to incarnation, parole and probation who are in correctional facilities and programs, probation programs, accountability courts, day reporting centers, recovery housing or residences and other drug diversion programs shall incorporate peer-led mental health and addiction recovery protocol with Certified Peer Specialists (CPS) who are certified by the State of Georgia.
Additionally, we must provide peer recovery support services to individuals presenting with substance use disorders in our hospitals across Georgia.
