The Georgia Council for Recovery Call on Congress to take Urgent Action on Addiction Recovery

The Georgia Council for Recovery calls on the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions to take urgent action on the comprehensive legislative package aimed at combatting the opioid epidemic.

The heart of the package is reauthorization of the SUPPORT Act, which focused on prevention, treatment, and recovery services for opioid misuse, including fentanyl. 

The bill was first passed in 2018, but lawmakers missed a September deadline to reauthorize many of its provisions. 

“Thousands of Americans are dying each month from opioid and drug overdoses. Reauthorizing the SUPPORT Act is crucial to save lives, support families, and provide local communities with much needed support and resources,” said Laurisa Guerrero, Executive Director of the Georgia Council for Recovery.

Urgent action is, additionally, required in the U.S. House of Representatives:

The House Energy and Commerce Committee unanimously passed a limited version of the bill over the summer, but the full House chamber hasn’t yet approved the legislation.

“The Georgia Council for Recovery calls upon Speaker Mike Johnson to make the legislation passed by the House Energy and Commerce Committee a priority before the House adjourns later this week,” said Guerrero.
